We do a ton of kid stuff around here! My girls are always crafting and looking for fun DIY projects. We decided to celebrate the newest How to Train Your Dragon movie by creating a Lightning Cloud Display. Check out the step by step directions and why this project almost ended up in our #fails category!
DIY: LIGHTNING CLOUD DISPLAY
To celebrate the release of HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON 3: THE HIDDEN WORLD the girls and I created a lightning cloud display!

Supply list:
White Round Paper Lanterns
100% Polyester Poly-Fil
Ceiling Screw Hook
Spiderwire
Dowel Rod – wood **we did not end up using this
Hot Glue Gun and glue sticks
Micro LED String Lights Battery Powered
1. Hot glue the poly-fil onto your lantern
This was the part that took the longest! I would recommend an adult doing this part of the craft because the glue is hot and the kiddos may have trouble with it.
For the best cloud shape I would recommend using 3 paper lanterns total: 1 large and 2 smaller ones for the sides of the cloud. Check out this DIY which we used as inspiration.
2. Check for spots you may have missed and tie the wire
Go through and check to ensure you covered all parts of the paper lantern with the poly-fil. Next tie spiderwire to the top part of your lantern.
3. Feed the string lights through the lantern
Our favorite part, turn on the lights and feed them through the base of your lantern.
4. Time to hang the cloud
Our original plan was to create a large cloud and hang it off a wooden dowel. We ended up skipping the dowel part and using the spiderwire to hang directly onto a cup hook.
The girls loved their DIY Lightning Cloud display. I honestly thought it looked more like a moon rather than a cloud. But that’s okay. The important part is they love it and we tried one more craft together!
Key things to know:
- Make sure you have enough hot glue sticks! We ran out after the first lantern.
- Buy paper lanterns of different sizes to get that cloud look.
- I feel like we could turn this into a “moon” by stuffing the lights back into the lantern and leaving it at that.
