This is how birthdays goes around here: I’m stressed, it’s singing time and I’m nervously reaching for my phone to snap that perfect picture. This year I did something different – actually planned! And I pulled off some great pictures and have some easy birthday photography ideas.
Okay. I LOVE how this photo came out. And I attribute it to my camera and learning how to use it. But, here’s the last few years of pictures I found:
And this one from last year:
Easy Birthday Photography Ideas
I decided to keep everything simple this year.
I bought:
- a birthday dress
- a large cupcake from Walmart
- #6 birthday candle
We drove down to our neighborhood park a few days before Gabby’s actual birthday to get her birthday photos!
Because I looked through birthday picture ideas on Pinterest I knew what kind of pictures I wanted:
- a shot of her holding the cupcake and smiling
- a shot of her blowing out the candle
That’s it! Those 2 shots are the only ones I wanted and I ended up with those plus more!
This was the perfect picture of Gabby holding her cupcake!
I love her expression in this one!
I am not sure how the color changed in this picture of Gabby blowing out her candle. Do you notice it’s cooler? I’m not the best at editing in lightroom so I’m not too worried about fixing it right now. I still love this shot because it shows how focused she is on her birthday wish and I love how her hands look holding the cupcake.
How do you Take a Good Birthday Picture?
If you’re not a photographer (I am NOT either) you might be wondering how to take a good birthday picture of your kid. I think it comes down to planning.
- Get familiar with your camera
- Use easy props
- Pick a day before the actual birthday
- Look through pinterest for pose ideas
- Take pictures as close to the Golden Hour as possible (the time at sunrise or sunset)
- Look at your background and make sure it looks nice
- Get a picture of your son or daughter doing something they love
I got this cool picture of Gabby on the monkey bars. She learned how to master the monkey bars this year and has been so excited to show us her new skill.
