When I was a kid my mom once tried to cut and style my hair. I should mention, she wasn’t a hair stylist.
She didn’t even know how to braid hair. Still doesn’t.
So she probably had no business holding my hair anywhere near a pair of scissors. Can you guess where this is going?
Yeah, she chopped off my hair. I looked like an asymmetric mushroom and she had to rush me to a salon where she made me tell them I did it to myself!
Let’s fast forward a few days. My dad is watching the bus as my sister and I arrive to our stop. He sees my sister. And then he notices she’s walking and talking with some little boy. Turns out….it was me!
Oh the horrors I endured as a 90’s child living with a mom/wanna-be-hair-stylist!
Now, it’s 24 + years later and my mom is over, and this time I’m styling her hair, no scissors involved though!
My mom is very social and has a busy life filled with work, family and tons of friends. We decided to cover up some stubborn gray hair and do a quick braided hairdo she can wear throughout the holiday season.
I chose Schwarzkopf® Keratin Color in Onyx to match my mom’s dark hair.
You can find Schwarzkopf® Keratin Color dyes in the hair dye section near the hair brushes and hair tools at your local Walmart.
The Schwarzkopf® Keratin Color has some pretty impressive features:
- The K-BOND PLEX™repairs the inner part of your hair to keep it strong and healthy looking
- 100% gray coverage
- The Pre-Color Serum conditions your hair before coloring to ensure you get an even color from root to tip
- Intense colors with less hair breakage
This hair dye was so easy to use. Even for a girl like me who doesn’t dye (or cut) her own hair, much less anyone else’s. I was nervous to dye my mom’s hair at first, but after we washed out the dye I noticed how great her hair looked and felt!
Now for the easy holiday hair style
First I sectioned off two parts of hair near the front of the head and did a french braid on both sides.
I used small rubber and like hair ties to hold the braids in place while I curled her hair to add volume.
After adding some curl to her hair with a flat iron, I pulled the two braids together and used another small, black rubber band tie to secure the braids in place. Afterwards, I removed the two hair ties from each end and curled that piece of hair.
My mom’s hair was so shiny and definitely easy to manage. Just look how beautiful her hair looks styled!
My mom and I loved the professional quality hair color from the comfort of our own home! She was excited to get a new picture for her work badge on the same day I styled her hair.
A few days later we video chatted and she told me how many compliments she received while at work on both her hair style and the color!
If you’re looking for a dye that offers long lasting color intensity while keeping your hair looking healthy and strong (without the breakage!) you need to try Schwarzkopf® Keratin Color.
You can find your perfect color on Facebook and Instagram.

Nice! I’m going to try this one. My hairstyling skills sound about like your mom’s 🙂 but I bet this one is doable.

I will try this for sure. I am the worst at doing my own hair!
My hairstyling skills leave a lot to be desired… it’s usually a ponytail or hair down lol! I am going to try this style on my daughter.
I’ve never colored my hair before, so don’t know much about that. But, I love the braided hairstyle! I’ve been letting mine grow out lately so could probably try this soon!
Very cute side braid and holiday hairdo. The hair dye seems to work really well based on your detailed pictures.
Wow I love braid hairstyle. This SIDE BRAID hairdo so simple and beautiful I would love to try this! thanks for the demo You’re so beautiful with your hairdo

I love this so much. I was just thinking about adding a pop of color into my hair. I’ll have to try this out.
I use arctic fox hair dye for my hair colors. it doesn’t have all the harsh alcohols or toxins in it that kill your hair. My hair collor actually lasts 10+ months (minus my roots growing out) I love this look on you!
I was wondering how that keratin color was! I saw it in the store the other day. Love the hairstyle, too!

Aw I actually think this looks very pretty indeed. I may give it a whirl but dont think the results will be the same haha xx
I love that she made you tell them you did it yourself. I have cut my hair lots of tons as an adult it works out but as a kid it did not. Love the color and braid!
I will mention this brand to my stylist because whatever she uses never lasts. I love side braids and wear them myself.
Haha, I loved your story about your mom chopping your hair off. She looks fantastic!
