Family, Positivity for moms

My Golden Rule: Be Kind

Welcome back to My Year of Positivity Series. Each week I share a new post with ideas related to positivity. Last week we talked about 27 Things To Do When You Feel Sad. This week I’m writing about how to be kind. I’m not writing about kindness because I consider myself the ultimate kindness guru.

In fact, it’s quite the opposite. The reason I’ve decided to write the series My Year of Positivity is because I’m not always the most positive person. This series is meant to encourage me to delve deeper into positive thinking. I hope I can help you along the way.

I do consider myself a kind person. I’m a nurse. I love taking care of other people. I love being a wife and mother and caring for my family.

But, the truth is- I’m not always kind.

When things don’t go my way I get irritated. I may snap at my family. I may get over-dramatic and just walk away without telling my husband what the problem is. Or, I bring up old problems. None of these things fix the problem at hand. And none of these behaviors show kindness to my family.

Sometimes I feel like it’s easier to show kindness to strangers and co-workers than my own family. That’s a scary thing to feel and live by.

I’ve been watching this clip of Oprah. She talks about The Golden Rule: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

Pretty simple, right?

Treat other people kindly and you’ll get that kindness back to you in some form.how to be kind and show kindness to others | being kind to your friends and family | always strive to be a kind person |

My goal this week is to show MORE kindness to my family. Here are a few things I’ve brainstormed to get that goal going:

  • Giving my daughter my undivided attention
  • Taking special trips out for ice cream
  • Reading to my 3 year old
  • Planning a date night for my husband and I
  • Cooking my kids’ favorite meals
  • Mail my son a letter about how awesome he is
  • Playing games with my kids, they especially love Pokémon Go right now
  • Encourage my husband to get out of the house with a friend

Maybe you’re already practicing kindness to your family but need help showing kindness to other people. Here’s a few ways you can start:

  • When in line at a drive thru pay for the person ordering behind you
  • Help out a neighbor by mowing their lawn
  • Bring beautiful plants to a local nursing home, ask a staff member who you should give them to
  • Send an encouraging letter to a friend

Being kind is about incorporating small gestures into everyday life.

What kind gesture are you grateful for today?
