DIY fairy garden containers are super popular right now. I wanted to make a fairy garden with my girls and keep the cost to a minimum. After looking into DIY fairy gardens I found tons of ideas and I knew we could make a fairy garden with inexpensive plants and Dollar Tree decor items. So here’s how to make a fairy garden container that’s easy and cheap!
A fairy garden is a neat way to introduce your kids to gardening. I’ll be the first to admit it – I don’t have a green thumb. In fact, most of my plants die.
Probably because I forget about them.
Or I just don’t have what it takes. Who knows?
Either way (black thumbs and all) I fell in love with all the ideas swirling around about fairy gardens.
My youngest daughter and I talk about fairies a lot. We like to make up bedtime stories full of fairy princesses and fairy babies.
It’s fun and talk of fairies really gets her little imagination thinking big!
how to make a fairy garden container
It’s actually pretty easy (and cheap!) to create a magical space for your fairy friends.
supplies
- container
- soil (I used the same soil I bought to plant my veggies)
- 2-5 plants per container *depending on your container size
- decor rocks from Dollar Tree
- miniature decor items from Dollar Tree
- drill
- a trowel *optional- you can totally use your hands
step 1
Drill a few holes on the bottom of your container for drainage.
The container on the left is from Home Depot and it was less than $5! It’s a plastic material. The container on the right I found at Dollar Tree for $1! I saw similar containers at JoAnn’s Fabrics priced at $20. The container on the right is a very thin tin material.
Step 2
Fill the container with dirt and get your plants in there. My favorite part of this fairy garden is the Creeping Jenny Goldilocks. I love how it looks in the container. The girls also chose 1 mini cactus each to plant in the garden.
Step 3
Now that you’ve got your plants where they need to be you can add your decorations. This is where it gets fun. You can DIY miniature fairy houses or buy mini garden stuff from the Dollar Tree like we did.
Step 4
Water the fairy garden and wait for the fairies!
Honestly, creating this magical fairy garden was so much fun. I put it off making the fairy garden because I had this idea of perfection in my brain.
I wanted the best plants (and I know NOTHING about plants) and the best fairy decor items. I wanted a huge container or maybe plant the garden into our backyard.
But, when I let go of the idea of perfection we were able to have fun shopping and crafting this beautiful garden!
The best part is they are both wanting to be outside more. Gabby tries to find fairies each morning. And Layla waters her garden after school a few times a week.
I even let them “re-decorate” if they want. As long as they are careful with their plants.
I definitely think creating a fairy garden (or you can make dinosaur gardens if your boys don’t want a fairy garden) is a unique way to spend time with the kids. And I like that we can spend more time together outside – as long as we keep it alive! 🙂
