We are not a camping kind of family. My kids love their electronics and I won’t say that sleeping outdoors is really on my bucket list. But we have decided that we want to be a more “outdoorsy” kind of family. Living in the south means we have extended periods of time where the weather is pretty good for outdoor activities. Camping in Texas (and glamping) is now on our radar and we recently spent a weekend in the cabins at Paradise Canyon.
Camping in Texas
We planned our camping trip during the last weekend of March. We figured the weather would be warming up (we were wrong) and it wouldn’t be too hot to be out in nature.
I’m gonna say I probably would not plan on camping during the summer months (July and August) because it’s just too hot here. I don’t think we’d survive a hot, humid and sticky tent with 4 kids. #KeepingItReal
So anyway — we booked a cabin at Paradise Canyon for the weekend. If you’re planning on booking a cabin there here’s what you need to know:
- There is a small dorm style fridge so make sure to bring a cooler for your food
- There is no stove so be prepared to cook over a fire pit or the BBQ grill
- They do not provide the sheets – bring 1 queen size sheet and two full size sheets, the room has a loft with a queen size mattress and the downstairs has two futons
- Bring cash – you can rent a canoe or other stuff for around $35 dollars per day
- The kitchen does have dish soap, a dish rack and sponge (I didn’t know this and brought my own)
- The cabins are not right off the water, they are across the street – not a big deal at all and I liked the privacy
What we Loved About Paradise Canyon
The view. OMG. The water, the canyon, even the roads leading to the place are gorgeous. Getting away from the city, seeing the bright night sky and pairing the view with s’mores was perfect.
The water was much too cold for me to jump in but my kids didn’t hesitate to jump in!
We spent the weekend with my amazing friend Pam and her family (they booked the cabin right next to us) in Paradise Canyon. The weekend was about letting the kids explore. The kids climbed trees, made new friends and most importantly were OFF THE VIDEO GAMES!
We would definitely go back to Paradise Canyon. I liked that my cell phone service didn’t work so I was forced off the internet too! It was a perfect reason to relax, have a drink by the fire and eat some s’mores!
Here’s Pam and I snapping a rare mom photo –why is it that we take so many pictures of the kids? Moms we need to get into the pictures too! Did you notice we’re #twinning? 🙂 We both packed our Wine Run hoodies which were perfect for the cool weather.

Love this! They have a great kids play area, too & the owner had mentioned offerring private tours of the land beyond the camping area. It’s by appointment only, so you may need to contact the office ahead of time. While we were there, they were working on building a pavillion area- for live misic and dancing- and if you’re looking for a venue for a family reunion or retreat, they do have the larger cabin that they rent out to bigger parties. Had a great time and would definitely go again!
What an interesting article to read. The kids really need to come out and move around and play.
I try to bring my children to hiking a few times each year, but it gets harder the older they get.

Hi Crystal,
I have enjoyed reading your review. Selecting a cabin was a “wise” choice to start your camping adventure. Having fun is supercharged while enjoying nature up close and personal. Pus spending time with your friends is always a bonus.
Thanks for this amazing review. This looked like an interesting campsite. I’ve never camped in Texas before. If you guys ever decide to camp in North Carolina, I’d suggest you check Great Smoky National Park.
