SUMMER ACTIVITIES FOR RAINY DAYS

Is there anything worse than being cooped up in the house with the kids on rainy days in the middle of summer break? It doesn’t matter if you’re staying at home or you’re on vacation somewhere. If you’re dealing with several days of non-stop rain, it’s time to come up with some summer activities for rainy days.

This is a SUPER OLD picture of my kids. I’m glad it’s over 5 years later and they still haven’t outgrown wanting to build a fort!

I absolutely love rainy days. I love the storms, loud thunder and lightning! We don’t get much rain during the summer here in San Antonio. But, for the days we do get a lot of rain, we’re ready with fun activities for the kids.

SUMMER ACTIVITIES FOR RAINY DAYS

WHAT TO DO ON A RAINY DAY AT HOME

I love using rainy days at home during summer to relax and recharge.

  • Snuggle up on the couch in your favorite pjs.
  • Read a good book!
  • Watch a movie or a kid-friendly series.
  • Play board games.
  • Nap!

All those sound nice right? But they won’t work once your stuck in the house for several days – the kids will go stir-crazy! If you’ve got young kids at home it’s important to get more creative.

  • Build a fort – this is so easy!
  • Grab all your art supplies and create something new.
  • Create an obstacle course through your house.
  • Bake cookies.
  • Make homemade pizza.
  • Grab old Halloween costumes and stay “in character” all day.

Trust me, if you don’t suggest things to do, the kids will probably want to be on video games all day. And we don’t want that! Rainy days are perfect to help fuel their imaginations and take a break from the day to day routines and technology.

WHERE TO GO ON A RAINY DAY

Just because it’s pouring down rain, doesn’t mean you can’t head out and have some fun. You just have to find indoor activities that you can easily drive to.

Museums are great for rainy days and many have special exhibits during the summer months. Spend a rainy afternoon exploring art or local history and end it with lunch or early dinner at a favorite restaurant.

Don’t forget about your local library. Spending the day browsing and reading can be a pleasant way to stay busy. Give them a call or look online to see if there are special events and activities set up for the kids that day. Some libraries also have gaming rooms where kids and adults can play board and video games.

If you and your kids need to burn off some excess energy, head to the local aquatic center or indoor pool.

Visiting an indoor playground is another great option, we usually head to an indoor trampoline park.

Walk around the mall and do some window shopping.

And don’t forget to check local movie theaters and regular theaters to see what performance and shows they offer.

With a little creative thinking, even a few rainy days can become enjoyable summer experiences.
