Pokémon Go: What You Need to Know

So this Pokémon Go game has taken the world by storm. My 10 year old son tells me how the game has more users than Twitter! Is that true?!

I’m not a gamer. So when my sister told me to download the app for the kids to play I didn’t want to. It wasn’t until my husband came home and told me he downloaded it that I relented.

I downloaded the app. Set up my character.

And then I caught a Pokémon right in my own kitchen! On the first try, I’m seriously so skilled at catching Pokémon.

Except when playing on my husband’s phone. I tend to miss (not on purpose) and use up all his Pokémon balls. Oppps.

Pokémon Go is a game you can download to your phone. You set up your avatar as a Pokémon Trainer and you head outside. You’ll notice Pokémon along your path. Tap on the Pokémon and then throw one of your Pokémon balls to catch it.

Our Tips & Tricks for Playing Pokémon Go

  • When you run out of Pokémon balls drive/walk/bike over to several churches and parks to replenish. We’ve noticed that all the churches and parks in our area are Pokémon stops. You can go there and find lots of Pokémon and you can get free Pokémon balls to add to your arsenal.
  • Be careful–sometimes they break out and you’ll waste tons of Pokémon balls. If you get tired of wasting your Pokémon balls, look at the top left of your screen. It has the run away icon. Tap it. And leave that crazy Pokémon alone until you either 1. get better at catching Pokémon or 2. have your kids around to help you or 3. have more Pokémon balls to waste! Finally figured out what Pokemon Go is. Seems like such a fun way to play with my kids. Pin Now, Read Later!

Safety Tips While Playing Pokémon Go

  • Don’t trespass. Respect private property.
  • Don’t play the game while driving. We do drive to different spots (churches and parks) but we don’t play while driving.
  • Obviously be aware of your surroundings. I won’t let my kids play alone because I think they’d be to engulfed in the game to be aware of what’s around them. So we all play together.
  • Take along water when walking.

We love playing Pokémon Go because our kids love it! And it’s a fun and frugal way to keep them entertained. Plus, I’m not gonna lie. I totally play when I’m out and about without my kids 🙂 Do you play Pokémon Go? Head over to Facebook and tell me your tips and tricks.

It’s a lot of fun for my older kids (9,10) the youngest who is 3 doesn’t know what’s going on. She does love being outside though!

  3. I think the main thing is that kids get outside, it seems a shame that this is the only way some parents can do it. There are so many other things for kids to explore.

Yes, there are so many other things to explore! Have you tried geocaching with your kids? I hear that’s fun!

  4. Forgive me, but this game is annoying the heck out of me. So many people getting hurt and ending up in strangers yards. I just think it’s weird. Hopefully you can have some safe fun, though. #HomeMattersParty

I think A LOT of people are annoyed by it Jamie. I was at first too! I had no idea what it was all about. But, if you think about it–you can get hurt with practically any activity outdoors. It’s all about using common sense and being safe. I am always with my kids when they play. We don’t go into anyone’s yard. The game is fun for my kids (and husband) and gets us spending time together as a family. It’s a win-win, but I agree, it’s not for everyone.

  12. Pokemon Go is really a great game. I’m so glad that it already got released. This is the only game that makes me want to go outside. This game actually helped me get some friends and chat with strangers talking about Pokemons and all of that. And since this game was released I started watching the Pokemon TV Series at the beginning.
