Growing up I lived in a small town. I was a minority as a Mexican-American child and I knew it. I was different- I spoke different -bilingual: English and Spanish, dressed different, ate different kinds of foods than my peers did. Being different when all I wanted to do is fit in was HARD!
Eventually, I grew to embrace my culture and my differences.
I can remember being pulled out of class in middle school and in high school to translate whenever a person who only spoke Spanish came in. It was then that I realized how useful it was to be bilingual! Fast forward many years and I see what a blessing it is to know another language. I took French in high school and swear that I learned the language faster than most of my classmates and I have gotten better job offers and higher pay throughout my life because I can speak Spanish! Win-win! 🙂
What We Are Reading Tonight
A Fish in Foreign Waters: a Book for Bilingual Children This is a cute book about Rosie, a fish, who moves away from her friends and has to learn a new language. I can identify with little Rosie when she feels embarrassed and insecure when navigating a foreign language. We had fun reading this book and my 2 year old carries it around and “reads” it to me during the day.

I received a free copy of this book for my honest review 🙂 Check out my other {book reviews}
