The average American household does at least one load of laundry per day. Is this true for your family? If so, that’s a lot of time in the laundry room!
Today let’s talk about how to save time while doing laundry and when it’s better to spend time taking care of your clothing.
Save time doing laundry with these tips:
Use shorter cycles
Most of the soil comes out of the clothing in the first few minutes of a wash cycle. So by using shorter wash cycles you can save water, time and help prevent your dark clothing from fading.
My favorite setting is the Quick Wash on my washing machine. Most of our laundry goes through the Quick Wash which is about a 30 minute cycle.
Stop the spill
Keep your detergent in a basket or on a liner. Spilled detergent is easier to clean up from a plastic basket or liner instead of all over the dryer, all over the floor under your washing machine or on a shelf. (Ask me how I know.) We use a plastic basket on top of the dryer to hold our products. This makes cleaning up a breeze and it’s easy for me to access what I need. (Our shelf is too high for me to reach.)
Hand washing
I want to be honest….I don’t hand wash. It’s super rare for me to hand wash anything. But, I do place my delicate garments in a mesh bag and wash them on the gentle cycle.
If you do decide to hand wash be sure you’re not squeezing fabrics to remove water – this can cause them to stretch or tear. If you want to be lazy like me, just wash them in a mesh bag on the gentle cycle. Yes, it takes more time, but so worth it to keep the clothing intact.
It’s always tempting to overload the washer. The more clothes you get in means the more clothes you get done, right? Wrong. Well kinda wrong – yes you get the laundry done but not all of it will be clean.
When a washer is too full the clothes won’t agitate or rinse enough. So plan on washing your laundry in smaller loads and make sure the clothes are equally distributed around your washer to keep it balanced.
Use laundry products you love.
I’m always more motivated to do laundry when I’m using great smelling detergents.
I like using Ensueño® Liquid Laundry Detergent because of the fresh scent and how clean my clothes feel after washing.

One load a day seems excessive, but we’re only a family of three. I maybe do 3-4 loads a week. I didn’t know about the quick thing, but that’s a great idea for saving water, I’ll have to try doing that instead.
