Sidewalk Chalk Art: Make Your Own Ice Chalk

To make your own sidewalk ice chalk art you’ll need:

  • ice mold
  • 1 cup water
  • a few drops of food coloring
  • 1/2 cup baking soda
  • 1/2 cup cornstarch
  • vinegar
  • squeeze bottle

I found the idea for ice chalk in this blog post. I just followed the directions a little different to make a larger batch with more colors all at once.

Directions: Measure out the baking soda and cornstarch into a big bowl. Stir in the water and mix well. Next take a 1/2 cup of the mixture and pour into a clean bowl or cup and add a few drops of food coloring. I used my measuring cup since it had a spout and it was easier to pour into the molds once I added the color I wanted. Pour this mixture into your ice cube tray or mold. Rinse the bowl or cup and repeat with another 1/2 cup of the mixture until you get a combination of colors in your molds. Carefully place the molds and ice trays in your freezer. When you’re ready to use put a bit of vinegar into a squeeze bottle and pour some over the ice chalk art – you’ll see it erupt!

See how cool it looks when the colors run together? This is after we splashed the ice chalk with vinegar.

I did use the hose to wet the driveway where we would be playing. This made it easier for us to see the colors run together.

Fun Molds for Ice Chalk

After playing (not gonna lie this was messy) I grabbed the hose to clean up the driveway but Gabby kept getting in the way. So she got hosed down too!

We had so much fun creating sidewalk chalk art and I loved the icy element of it. Gabby loved every second (especially getting soaked by the hose) and keeps begging me to make some more.

Don’t forget to PIN for later!
