After School Conversation Starters

This post is sponsored by Sparkling ICE but the content and opinions expressed here are my own.

I’m not the best at getting the kids to chat with me after school. My 6 year old can go on for HOURS about her day but, the tween and teen are more quiet about their school days. I like to think up and look up conversation starters to use with all the kids. Here are some of my favorite after school conversation starters.

After School Conversation Starters

  • What was the best part of your day?
  • What did you eat for lunch?
  • What’s the funniest thing that happened today?
  • Tell me one thing you’re grateful for.
  • What’s one thing you learned today?
  • Did anything make you feel happy?
  • Did anything make you feel sad?
  • If you had $20 dollars to spend right now what would you buy?
  • What is your favorite song and why?
  • What is your favorite app? (If your kids have cell phones)
  • If all the animals in the world were tame and you could have one as a pet which animal would it be?
  • How did you help someone today?
  • What is the one thing you couldn’t live without?
  • Describe yourself in 3 words.
  • You’re on a deserted island – what three things did you bring?
  • What is your favorite game and why?
  • What are you looking forward to this week?
  • What are you not looking forward to this week?
  • What is one thing you want to learn how to do and why?
  • If you could only eat one food for the rest of your life what would it be?

Usually after asking a few of the  conversation starters questions the kids will start to open up their days. Which is awesome because I want the kids to know I care about what goes on in their daily lives. It’s easy to get lost in the busyness of life: kids, dogs, husband, dinner, sports, work, cleaning…I think I could go on and on.

And while I know being on-the-go is the season of my life right now, I’m trying to slow down the distractions by taking the time to chat and snack with the kids in the afternoon. I feel like a lot of my time I’m rushing to do something but I know how important my undivided attention is to the kids.

The kids were super excited when I bought the Sparkling Ice Black Raspberry drinks. Sparkling Ice drinks have zero carbs and zero sugar, but do have vitamins and antioxidants added.

I even found the Sparkling Ice + Caffeine -Black Raspberry flavor!

The caffeine kick in the afternoon is exactly what I need. The Sparkling Ice + Caffeine -Black Raspberry replaced my afternoon coffee this week!

I hope the after school conversation starters prompt meaningful chats between you and your kids!

You can find both flavors by clicking over to the Sparkling Ice Store Locator.

I am loving this post and especially your conversation starters for after school. It is important to reach out and encourage your kids to tell you about their day as it is a great bonding experience for both mom and child. I love this and appreciate you sharing 🙂

  6. These are such awesome conversation starters. It’s good to ask questions you can actually get answers to, not just one-word answers. Thanks for this!

  7. I love these conversation starters. Usually my kids come back and all start talking at once but we’ve had some days that they need to be drawn out. Will definitely try these out.

  8. Great post. I really need it. I will copy your questions to have it. My most common question after school is, “did you get a grade.” I have to change that.
